Carlos Alcaraz flashed one of the greatest winners you will ever see in tennis.
But Novak Djokovic had the last laugh.
Alcaraz’s winner in the second set drew praise all over social media, and left even Djokovic impressed, but it was the third-seeded Djokovic won carried the day, winning 6-3, 5-7, 6-1, 6-1. Alcaraz won the second set, but as the third set got underway the top seed started to cramp up, and even conceded an entire game so he could receive medical attention.
Djokovic took the third set 6-1 in just 30 minutes, and it was clear that Alcaraz was struggling. Djokovic would go on to cruise in the fourth set, en route to his victory.
“First and foremost I have to say tough luck for Carlos. At this level, the last thing you want is cramps and physical problems in the late stages of a Grand Slam. I hope he can recover and come back very soon,” said Djokovic after the match. “I told him at the net, he knows how young he is, he has a lot of time ahead of him. He’s an incredible competitor, so he deserves all the applause and all the support. Congratulations to him for his fighting spirit and hanging in until the very end.”
Djokovic will take on Casper Ruud, as the fourth seed dispatched Alexander Zverev in straight sets on Friday. Zverev seemed tense at the start, with a number of shots landing long in the first set. Ruud took the first set 6-3, but it was Zverev who had the advantage in the second set, up 2-1 early. But with the game at 3-3, Ruud broke serve, taking a 4-3 advantage.
He would not look back, closing out the second set 6-4 en route to his 6-3, 6-4, 6-0 victory.
