The Los Angeles Clippers are reportedly promoting Trent Redden to replace the departing Michael Winger as general manager.

ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported Redden’s promotion, along with the promotion of Mark Hughes to senior vice president/assistant general manager.

Winger left the Clippers last month to join the Washington Wizards as their president of basketball operations. The 43-year-old had been with the Clippers since 2017, serving under president of basketball operations Lawrence Frank.

Redden will continue to report to Frank, who maintains final say on all basketball-related matters. Wojnarowski reported Redden has been a “lead strategist and talent evaluator” since joining the front office in 2017.

Redden previously spent 11 years with the Cleveland Cavaliers organization.

The Clippers were eliminated in five games by the Phoenix Suns during the 2023 NBA playoffs, as they’ve continued to deal with the inconsistent availabilities of stars Kawhi Leonard and Paul George. Leonard missed the entire 2021-22 season while recovering from an ACL injury, leading to the Clippers missing the playoffs, and their early exit this season can largely be attributed to the absence of both stars. George missed the entire playoffs, while Leonard sat out the final three games of the Clippers’ first-round loss to the Phoenix Suns.

Redden’s biggest goal for the offseason may simply be crossing his fingers and hoping Leonard and George make it to October fully healthy. As it stands, the Clippers have a veteran-laden and deep roster; they simply need health at this juncture.
